North High School opens.   Mr. Burnell Smith is the first Instrumental Music Director. A school dance band was formed, playing for several class parties and for nearly all of the pep assemblies. The concert band had their own assembly and entertained at a PTA meeting. The dance band contributed to the success of the first annual school review, the "North Highlights." The first ever school play, “The Curious Savage,” was staged by the Polar Players.

New uniforms were purchased for the concert band and new robes for the concert choir (directed by Mr. Jerry Hoover). The new outfits were shown off in the Fall Concert in November and during 2 school assemblies.  "North Highlights" showcased the talents of instrumentalists and vocalists, and featured the school dance band. Band officers were Roger Pfingston, captain; Warren Grimwood, lieutenant; and John Wright, drum major. The dance band accompanied Mr. Hoover's vocalists in presenting the Spring production,"Kittiwake Island."

Captain Warren Grimwood was in command of the band during the marching season. He was assisted by Lieutenant Welker Gilpatrick.  The orchestra's main event of the year was the spring concert. North band members received 8 firsts and 3 seconds at the district solo/ensemble contest.  At the state contest, North captured 5 firsts. The dance band performed "Jersey Bounce" at the annual North Highlights. The Spring Musical was “Girl Crazy,” by George Gershwin.

Drum major Jack Wright guided the marching band through many thrilling halftime performances. John Schwartz was captain and John McCulley was lieutenant. North musicians received 19 firsts at the district solo/ensemble contest and 15 firsts at the state contest. "The King and I" was presented as the spring musical.
