Directors and Staff

Mr. Steve Shelley

Instrumental Music Director

     Mr. Shelley is a Boonville, Indiana native and is currently in his 32nd year of teaching, all at North High School. He received his Bachelor of Music Education and Master of Music Education degrees at the University of Evansville. He is a member of the Evansville Teachers Association, the Indiana Bandmasters Association, and the International Association of Jazz EducatorsMr. Shelley has performed on saxophone with the Evansville Symphonic Band and "Zynergy," a local big band jazz ensemble. Mr. Shelley has also been the Director of the EVSC Honors Jazz Ensemble for 25 years, a group which is comprised of the top jazz musicians from the five EVSC High Schools. Mr. Shelley's groups have had performances for President Ronald Reagan, Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels, former Evansville Mayor Russ Lloyd, Jr., a performance at the Peach Bowl Game, nine appearances at Disneyworld (including a national TV Disney Easter Parade performance), an ensemble appearing in concert with Shania Twain, and jazz groups appearing with legendary trumpeter Maynard Ferguson, saxophonist Ernie Watts, and Evansville natives Stef Scaggiari (piano) and Bruce Lett (bass).  Mr. Shelley is also an active music arranger.

Mrs. Jane Bernhardt

Assistant Director

     Mrs. Bernhardt, a graduate of North High School, is a math teacher at North.  She has taught at North for 42 years, and has also served as Math Department Head.   Mrs. Bernhardt is the founder and sponsor of the "Huskettes," the auxiliary group for the band. She holds a Bachelor and Masters Degree in Mathematics from the University of Evansville. Mrs. Bernhardt's husband, Richard, recently retired as the Director of Bands at Pike Central High School. Mrs. Bernhardt is active as an alumni sponsor for the Alpha Omicron Pi chapter at the University of Evansville. She is a member of First Presbyterian Church, where she sings in the choir.  Her son, Dr. Rick Bernhardt, is a North Graduate who served as Drum Major of the Green Brigade for 2 years, attended Indiana University, and is now a Doctor of Medicine

Mrs. Karen Renner

String Specialist

     Mrs. Renner, a Louisville, Kentucky native, has a Bachelor of Music degree and a Master of Arts degree from the University of Evansville.  Mrs. Renner also holds certification

in Suzuki violin and piano instruction from the University of Wisconsin and the University of Louisville.  Mrs. Renner is an active private instructor for violin, viola and piano students.  She is currently a member of the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra.  She is a former member of the Brevard Music Center Orchestra, the Owensboro Symphony Orchestra, and the Evansville Chamber Orchestra.  She has also directed a local church orchestra and handbell choir.  In addition, she is the director of an After-School String Program which she founded at Evansville Day School.  She is a past Assistant Director of the EVSC Middle School Orchestra.  Mrs. Renner is married and has two children who were active in music and graduated from Evansville Harrison High School.

Mr. Richard Bernhardt

Woodwinds and Marching

      Mr. Bernhardt is the retired Director of Bands at Pike Central High School.  He served as the President of the Pike Central Teachers Association.   Mr. Bernhardt was also named Pike County Teacher of the Year in 2006.  Currently Mr. Bernhardt is active as a Field Representative for H&H Music.  With this job, Mr. Bernhardt promotes and helps organize the beginning band instrument selection process for numerous area corporation music programs.   Mr. Bernhardt directs the pit orchestra for the North Musicals and has also been the Orchestra Director for the EVSC Summer Musical productions over the last 2 years.  An avid golfer and boater, Mr. Bernhardt is also a volunteer fireman in Elberfeld.  He and his wife, Jane, are active members of the First Presbyterian Church, participating in the choir.

Mr. Tom Dean

Program and Visual Designer

     Mr. Dean is a 1984 graduate of Castle High School.  After earning his undergraduate degree from Ball State University in 1988, he taught for three years as Director of Bands at Eastbrook High School in Upland, Indiana. He then served a two year position as Graduate Assistant at Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio under Mark Kelly where he also received his Master's degree in Music education and instrumental conducting. Tom was hired as the associate director at Castle in the summer of 1993 and was the Castle HS Director of Bands from 1994-2006. Under his direction, the Castle Bands were a consistent state finalist in both marching and concert events.  Tom lives in Newburgh with his wife and two daughters and is now the Director of Bands at Castle Junior High School.

Richard Saucedo

Music Composer

     The Green Brigade performs original music written by Mr. Richard Saucedo, Chairman of the Performing Arts and Director of Bands at Carmel High School. Mr. Saucedo is on staff as a music composer and arranger with Hal Leonard Music Publishers.   In addition to being a nationally known composer, arranger and clinician, Mr. Saucedo also designs the music program for the 2001, 2002, and 2003 World Champion "Cavaliers" Drum and Bugle Corps

Michael McIntosh

Percussion Arranger

     Michael McIntosh is currently one of two percussion designer/arrangers and the music coordinator for the Bluecoats Drum and Bugle Corps.  His daily activities include acting as one of two percussion coordinators for the Carmel-Clay school district in Carmel, Indiana.  Mr. McIntosh is enrolled in Butler University where he is pursuing a degree in theory and composition under the tutelage of composer-in-residence, Dr. Michael Schelle. 

Michael Gobiel

Auxiliary Choreographer

     Michael Gobiel, from Dayton, Ohio, joined us in 2003 as a new member of our auxiliary staff. He is a former member of the Crossmen and the Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps. Michael currently serves on the staff of Phantom Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps.  He has also served on staff with the Glassmen. Michael has also performed with the national Broadway tour of BLAST, performing on percussion and in the visual ensemble. He also writes for several outstanding high school programs in Ohio and Texas.

Whitney and Katie are both recent North High School graduates.  Both served as captains of the Huskettes.

Logan Everly, Brittney Tyler, Ben Smith

Percussion Instructors

 

     Logan Everly is a Tell City High School graduate and currently a student at the University of Southern Indiana.  He has been an instructor for the Tell City Marching Marksmen and for Perry Central’s winter drum line.  Brittney Tyler, a 2008 North graduate, performed in the EVSC Honors Band and Honors Jazz Ensemble for 4 years.  She is currently a student at University of Southern Indiana.  Ben Smith, also a 2008 North graduate, is a vocal performance major at Indiana University.  Ben also performed with the EVSC Honors Jazz Ensemble while in high school.
